Uncage RRJ they are very cautious about what comes in through the mail cause you can spray liquid k2 on the paper then once the inmate gets it they can smoke it and get EXTREMELY high. Also you can sell literal strips the size of a triple a battery for $50+ Imagine a whole sheet of paper

You know this really highlights why it makes no sense for #judges to be sentencing all the drug addicts to jail— it just invites this very reality of people trying every means to get drugs into the jail

Uncage RRJ my dad went in there after being a severe alcoholic, and he was on medication for alcohol withdrawals and they just abruptly out of nowhere started denying his medication and caused him to go through DT's and had a heart attack and died from it. Then about 3 years later apparently my brother hung himself.

Uncage RRJ and also, unfortunately I was an addict myself ( now 2 years sober next month) I was brought into the jail pretty much dead ( had no pulse ) the cop didn't care, just dropped me off to the jail like that and the jail called ambulance and had me rushed out of the jail, and I actually died ( got the picture somewhere where my heart flat lined) and from what the jail officers told me was that I was pronounced dead and the hospital was in middle of calling the morgue or whatever to come get my body. But then somehow I came back to and started breathing apparently so then they called it off. But my family ( husband or mom) was never once called

here for you. It is sad so many family has had to suffer because of the mental and physical neglect.

I watched a story where a woman was placed in a jail because she had a mental breakdown and while in there she was begging and pleading for help telling them she didn't feel well, they kept telling her she drink water, she was vomiting everywhere the more she drank. The next day she was found deceased in her cell and she had been deceased for hours.

and fist fighting with the first baby in her arms. The drugs and alcohol she intakes with her children around. The cockroach infested house she had those babies living in. But no one is ready to talk about that.

All in all the jail is massively underfunded and the staff act as such. I went to high school with someone that worked there and its 20x worse on the inside than the outside.

I’ve often wondered what would happen to conditions inside if COs pay were raised to where part time were livable.

We have heard some assert that Jail reformed them. We believe this is the exception rather than the rule.

For some it’s the time away from the problems in their life, for others it’s the simpler life, etc.

We don’t disagree that some aspects of how jails function serves a purpose.

I'd only done 6 months total my whole life. I think that's just skating by the seat of my pants. But going back to that jail sounds comparable to a death sentence to me.

Uncage RRJ I agree and the prosecutors that put wrongfully accused people in there. It starts with the police lying and then  prosecutors not doing the right thing either. Then the jail treats them like they aren’t human. I understand someone being there that commit crimes, but not all should be locked up for. Especially someone addicted to drugs or mental health issues they need treatment not a jail cell. The ones who suffer chronic medical illness also need care in a different setting. I know people say commit the crime do the time, but murders, violent crimes, and predators belong in prison. Just my thoughts and opinions. 😃

Uncage RRJ another thought is there are programs out there that are volunteer ran and non profit who would love to go into these jails and offer their time to help reform and teach these inmates skills to better their lives outside of jail. Some of these inmates get way too much time sentenced. The jails would likely see less crime in there if they offer them something to better their lives outside. Some of these inmates who commit these crimes had a hard life and thats all they know. So let’s teach and help them. Not in a cell 23-24 hours a day, because som guard on a power trip locks them down. Leads to more violence in my opinion. Ok i could go on and on. I will shut up now. No jail or prison should be a for profit. Makes you wonder if they are dirty and makeup reasons to keep these people in longer to make money……

Uncage RRJ I had to ask for 3 days for sanitary napkins. The first 2 days were women. The 3rd day was a man. I went up to him in tears. I'm like please I'm bl33ding allover myself. I want to shower. Finally the next morning I woke up to a bag of them. I have only been there twice for a very short time and I'm traumatized. Literally. In our rooms almost 20 hours a day. Always on lock down. It's disgusting. A CO. Told a girl to 💩 in the shower where you go when you first come in to change out of your clothes into their clothes. And she was in tears and had no choice but to. She wouldn't take her out to go. That place needs to be shutdown.

I think he showed he cared a little to change things around to be there. We will take one step at a time.

I care a lot about what’s going on inside the jail, and I am sure there is room for some reform actions to be implemented, unfortunately as of right now I am not sitting on the board to initiate action steps to help.

The day of the meeting, before we all went inside, I gave some advice to the group on how to tell your stories and how to end your story in a way that would be asking a question for the jail to answer. Nobody followed this advice.

As of right now I am the only candidate that is collaborating with this group and with several other groups in regards to the operations surrounding the jail, and the treatment of the folks serving time.

I have developed a list of action items that if I am elected in as Sheriff of Spotsylvania County, I will initiate as a sitting member on the board. These action items will be explored and implemented where found appropriate. If there are things you feel I can include in the bullet list below let’s talk about them, you can message me anytime; and I am not opposed to a meeting in person.

Jail Reform Action Steps
• Strengthening emergency response times and procedures withing the facility.
• Strengthen oversight of healthcare providers, ensuring timely medical and dental care.
• Expand addiction, crisis intervention, and suicide prevention programs.
• Enhance support/ treatment for individuals with mental illness, and for those struggling with addiction. And enhance programs for transitioning back into society

Politicians tickle your ears for your vote, I am no politician. While a particular group is busy bashing me, I am busy actually trying to develop my plan to hit the ground running if I am elected.

My vision and intentions are perfectly clear. If elected as your next Sheriff, I will be a member of the jail board, and your concerns will be taken seriously.

In my past, I have had working relationships with the current members of the board, and would love the opportunity to sit and work with them again.

As your next sheriff, it will be me attending the meetings, not someone else from my administration.

Remember an advocacy group doesn’t complain, they work with those who can make changes through collaboration.

They will also crush medicine that the instructions clearly say do not crush or break but supposedly they have doctors note from some doctor who gave permission or ok'd the medicine to be crushed at one point in time and use it as an excuse to crush everyones medicine. its true they gave her son his seizure meds when they felt like it and when they did they crushed them. The time release pills he was prescribed.

Yes they are all in cahoots! I think even the hospital coordinates with them. They pronounced my son dead at the hospital and said that's where he died but that's bullshit! I have Eye witnesses that of course were inmates they said Michael was lifeless when he was removed from his cell. Because they let him hang there and wouldn't take him down. That's right, his fellow inmates wanted to get him down but the guards wouldn't let them! Michael my son might still be alive how they not let him just hang there.

None of them can be trusted. Even the newspaper the [name removed], don't trust them.

The bulk of the money comes from the families! It comes from the families because the inmates can't pay it. Like you noted, they don't have Jobs and once they get out to secure a job is very difficult for them. And most cases they don't have drivers licenses or cars to get to and from a job. Life is hard for these people so they end up committing a crime to go back. It's a racket and at the end of the day they know the deal and they're making piles of money handover fist 😑

the nurse should have started CPR on him while another person looked for the defibrillator. Medical neglect. The nurse didn’t care and took her sweet time. She should be held accountable for her lack of care. Thats what she is trained to do. I pray she looses her nursing license. Call her out. I pray for the day someone who worked there will tell us what really goes on in there.

Thank you [name removed] for your words.  it is a thought and a vision that will never leave my mind. For the longest time it was hard for me to even acknowledge let alone talk about it. I feel comfortable amongst you all as we have all in one way shape form or another been horrifically traumatized by this place and what goes on there. I feel like I can share it to the detail so I will do that now. I've never seen the place are the actual Cell that my son was in but this is how it was described to me. There's no place to tie in this case sheet high enough for one to hang her/himself. You can't just kick a chair out from under your feet that's what I'm trying to describe. My son had to hold his body weight from the floor until it was done. Can you even imagine his desperation. After he begged them and begged them daily for weeks for help! There were other inmates in particular one that saw Michael's decline and brought it to the attention of the jail staff and they blew him off as well. This particular inmate also filled out paperwork for Michael because he couldn't at this point. All of it was ignored.
Michael's heart was too good to survive that place is why he didn't. Michael should not have been there with robbers, murderers and thieves! He was in there for traffic violations. He got caught driving without a license and insurance several times. Countless court cases for a year and a half and one got past us and it was totally overlooked so he was a no-show and we all know what happens when you do not appear in front of the judge. Bench warrant is put out for you and that's how my son ended up there Michael had a drug problem that he tried desperately to control and for the most part he did OK, they found a straw under the seat of his car and had it Labbed. There was a residue in the straw. They kept putting his court dates off, rescheduling them

I don't know if any of you know if [name removed] a prominent lawyer in Fredericksburg, I reached out to him and actually hired him. He in his office drug their feet. [name removed] is a piece of shit. He felt guilty, we spent hours on the phone sometimes wee hours of the morning and he called me I didn't call him. And make no mistake I could hear the glass going with ice in it. He was sniffing quite a bit like he had a cold but he didn't have a cold. I'll just leave that there but that's what happened so help me God. To be fair, I felt his sympathy and caring but I also believe he carried some guilt is why he would call and we literally were on the phone for hours. He could've done way more before and after Michael's death and he knows it. In spite of it all he still is a piece of shit. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I'm sure And know he has clients that think he's the best thing since peanut butter but I know different. If you have any business with him I advise you to use extreme caution. Like a car salesman he can't be trusted ..

So I got blow-by-blow of what happened with Michael that night and from a very reliable source how I could talk about the urgency for my son that night 10 October 2022 at around 10 PM it was reported that my son was hanging in his cell and how it was discovered with a female guard found him when she opened the door and saw him she just began to scream hysterically. She ran off and told others of what she saw when the guards responded there was no sense of urgency they walked they did not walk fast and of course they did it not at all run. They were very nonchalant was the description given me. When they finally made it to [name removed] there were other inmates trying to get him down or should I say get the sheet from around his neck and they were ordered by the guards to not touch him. The inmates were ordered to leave the Cell. How long did my son hang there before the paramedics came I don't know. Inmates watched him removed from the Cell and said it was very noticeable that Michael was gone, his lips were blue and he appeared to be lifeless. Stafford County sheriffs department did their investigation and of course they found no wrongdoing. Isn't that convenient. According to the Deputy I spoke to they did the investigation, Rappahannock regional  jail staff did all and the best they could.  That was the last I heard from any of those bastards ....

Uncage RRJ Keep posting, sir! My celly two doors down hung himself in 2023. There were so many people who spoke out to COs beforehand and they laughed it off. I watched his dead body roll past my cell. I was cellies with murderers, kingpins, and the like who may never see another day again outside of those walls. I was there for drinking and driving. I drove up there one day with my son's Bible because he wanted it and I wanted him to have it. I drove up to the jail and went inside an isolated lobby with a speaker on the wall rang the bell and explain to the woman why I was there of course she was snotty because they talk to you like a prisoner/inmate from the get-go. That being said I explained who I was and why I was there to deliver my son's Bible to him. With sarcasm she said well that can't happen. I explained to her that it was just a Bible and could someone at least examine it and clear it so that he could have it. Her answer was a resounding and sarcastic no! This wasn't medication in pill form however it might've been the very thing that would've saved my son's life but like everything and anything it was all denied by the ugliness and the evilness of this place called a jail.

I know sometimes I get on here and probably speak out of line but I am bitter and I don't know that the bitterness will ever leave me for the way my son was treated, for the way we as his family and friends were treated. I know my demeanor at times is angry and believe me I try hard to contain that, believe you me it is very hard not to be angry. My son is dead due to the negligence and evilness of that place. All we wanted is for him to have his Bible that in a sense is a form of medication in a spiritual way/form. Someone could've at least shown some compassion for the reason and its purpose and they didn't. That should explain why my son is dead. That should explain why he gave up. I know Jesus himself escorted my son from that evilness. I know God has forgiven Michael for what he did because when he did it he was not of his right mind. I will always say out loud that this place, the people that own it and the people that operate it killed my son for their lack of compassion, for their lack of humanity for their incompetence for their lack of training and or caring for human life is what killed my son and his blood is on their hands !

And the sad thing and worst thing, nobody seems to really give a shit! My son's life didn't matter but to only me and that is pathetic! It is beyond pathetic!

III I understand the bitterness, I've had my rounds in this District so I totally get the feeling. I'm sorry for anyone that has to experience this the hard way. You don't know until you know. jails are short term holding facilities. There is no proof being incarcerated short term in jails cause mental health disabilities.
Persons who enter jail have prior mental health and medical issues. Documented. This includes diabetes wich you do not get in jails.

Ricketts jail short term . You cannot develop rickets as an adult during a short stay in jail.First, rickets is a condition that specifically affects children whose bones are still growing. In adults, the equivalent condition of softened bones is called osteomalacia.Second, developing osteomalacia (adult "rickets") requires a severe and prolonged lack of Vitamin D and calcium, usually taking months or years to develop. A short-term stay is not long enough for the body to deplete its reserves and cause the bones to soften.

[name removed] There are people who have been at the RRJ 5+ years while their cases make their way through court. 2 years is not unusual. By the jail's own records 10 months is average. Prolonged poor nutrition can definitely lead to diabetes. particularly when that poor nutrition constitutes a diet filled with carbohydrates and sugar. every inmate at the rrj receives a 2 in by 3-in piece of cake on every tray that they get. that cake allows the rrj to claim they are providing a certain number of calories. lack of fruits and vegetables also lead to all kinds of nutritionally related health problems. and severe lack of vitamin D comes from lack of sound exposure. So, wrong again, [name removed]

i know people at rrj in and out rrj because of picking up different charges. In my 14 years working there maybe 2 years max then sent to DOC. Majority already had diabetes diagnosis. I have know persons personally in prisons do not have diabetes after 5, 10 15 years. And no the food is not better in prisons. Inmates who come back from prison re entered in jail for violating probation or pick up new charges. No diabetes unless they already diagnosed with it. Heart disease etc high blood pressure etc. Also inmates by junk food off of commissary that can lead to diabetes. If it does very small majority.

Inmates who are pre diabetic when the enter can easily become fully diabetic when they exit give the high-sugar high-carbohydrate meals. Are you seriously trying to argue with me that the food they provide inmates at the RRJ is nutritionally sufficient? Come on. And "vary few" is not the same as "zero." Their health and medical needs are not met. Period. There are hundreds of stories. And I can give you a list of 15 inmates who have currently been there 5 years or more.

I mean, seriously, the thing you want to hang your hat on in this entire discussion is the inadequacy of the food? Prediabetes is entirely reversible. By making lifestyle changes, you can lower your blood sugar levels back to the normal range and avoid developing Type 2 diabetes. Those lifestyle changes are denied to inmates at the RRJ. No exercise and lack of proper nutrition. Nobody kicked diabetes by eating a 2"x3" slab of cake every meal

And let's talk about the "diabetes" diet. Instead of the slab of cake, they receive 6-8 slices of white bread on each tray. They are served "loaf" - which is meat substitute "not fit for human consumption" a disproportionate number of times. Most recently, in March of this year, diabetic trays had "loaf," 37 meals in a row. In most cases, it is cold because kitchen staff separates the special trays by stacking them on top, instead of in, the warming carts.

Yes, people lose weight at the RRJ. That happens due to lack of adequate nutrition. You and I would lose weight as well on a diet of Oatmeal, "Loaf," Noodles and Cake. My guy, of all the things you want to argue about here, you are going to hang on the food? There is no one who works with the place who is unaware the food is wretched." Meeting state caloric mandates with a slab of cake is not ok.

And facts, I spoke to officer who works there. No loaf is served to disciplinary inmates or diabetics. He has been there 3 years. Just like civil right groups who check out the claims and find out the real story, it takes away the credibility of those who do not get the real story or misinformed and make the claims.

Not saying rrj is perfect. Neither are other facilities. They just do the best they can. If public wants better. Support more funding for jails to help improve them to make the inmates quality of life incarcerated better.

unfortunately some inmates do and other don't. There are more detainees/inmates that do not complain about the facility. Only a small portion do. It is just reality. When you worked in corrections for 20 years you see both sides. My 20 years in corrections and 8 as lawenforcement on streets you see the good and bad. I am a firm believer there are more good people than bad. Continue the fight for better funding and medical care 💪

a final thought, as the nutrition issue seems to be prevalent for you. You have mentioned many times that the inmates purchase junk food from commissary. That is because there is no other food available. Commissary does not offer fresh fruit, or vegetables, or salads, or anything else that might be construed as healthful food alternatives to the complete lack of nutrition they are being served on their trays. A 2 inch by 3 inch slab of cake on every tray is every bit as harmful as anything inmates can purchase from commissary.

solitaire confinement is for extremely violent inmates which i have seen. Obama administration tried abolish it. Some prisons did for a while until violent offenders started hurting officers and other inmates at times killing them.those prisons and jails went back to isolation Segregation.

The paralyzed woman was paralyzed immediately before she got to RRJ and then was traumatically held in solitary for I think two weeks before they attended to her paralysis.

And the fact that inmates are at high risk of opioid overdose after release is irrelevant to this discussion. This discussion is about incarcerated individuals at the RRJ. I suppose one could study what untreated mental health conditions of incarcerated individuals leads to a high death rate so soon after incarceration. Clearly, we are not turning out healthy, adjusted individuals who have experienced restoration and are prepared to live a productive life. So the "department of corrections" isn't actually correcting anything. If mental and physical health neglect, inhumane treatment, lack of adequate supervision, poor nutrition, lack of basic human needs, and lack of adequate health care are leading to high suicide rates among returning citizens, then you have proven the point of this discussion.

Uncage RRJ the most important difference is that the head sheriff is an ELECTED official every four years. As in, we can get rid of them legally with real action and presence voting properly. Since our area is so heavily policed by the sheriff department rather than city cops!

Hi [name removed]! Did you know that there are over 125 rehabilitation programs currently funded in VA and accessible to VADOC? No? Neither do the majority of the attorneys- both defense and prosecutors-, along with the judges. Have you ever wondered why? Rehabilitation is not as lucrative as recidivism.
The court process, especially in Stafford County, seems to have disassociated the concept that the file folder numbers they’re referring to are actually affiliated with real life people. There are a multitude of options for sentencing, yet sending people to get help and rebuild their lives in lieu of mistreating them at RRJ under the guise of being understaffed keeps the money within the county.
The funding for RRJ is allocated based on how many inmates it is housing, so the county continuously sentences people there to ensure they maintain funding for their understaffed program, whether it is in the best interest of the inmate or the facility.
